Sheri L @RT82831803 06/08/2023 The bravery of the people shown in this movie who are escaping the oppression and cruelty of the Hasidic Jewish community in New York is remarkable, inspirational, and commendable. It's so sad that our government cannot (or will not) protect women (and men) living under such oppression and abuse in this community. See more 04/13/2020 As expected, the tales of people who left the Hasidic community of Brooklyn were sad and, at times, harrowing but there was little exploration of the traditions, beliefs or motives of the community from which they were fleeing. As a result, this documentary never really took off and, apart from the odd moment, shed very little light on the subject matter. See more 04/12/2020 Outstanding documentary about 3 courageous sojourners who decide to exit their extremely insulated Hasidic Jewish community and enter into the "secular world." The film shows the difficulties and obstacles they face in the transition: Losing that which was familiar and overcoming intense rejection from friends and family. We see Etta losing custody of her 7 children through an unjust court system, influenced by highly-paid Hasidic lawyers who find and use loopholes in US law to ensure the children are kept and raised within the confines of the Hasidic community. Still, with support from FOOTSTEPS and other services, these 3 people eschew traditional Hasidic ways, and make Herculean efforts to be more authentic and true to themselves --- and bring more openness and raw honesty -- into their lives.
