Critics Consensus

Cheap-looking and tonally confused, One True Loves wastes an interesting premise on a romantic comedy that largely lacks love and laughs.

There is little payoff, with Fickman running shy of the full-blooded commitment to make his film a proper weepie and instead constantly reverting to sassy, annoyingly self-aware comedy that makes light of everything. Go to Full Review

The movie has the general shape of a comedy, but any laughs are largely unintentional. Go to Full Review

Stumbles even as a piece of Hallmark sappiness. Go to Full Review

There’s an attempt from Liu to come off as charming, but, not unlike his Twitter feed, it just ends up feeling cringe-worthy. Go to Full Review

One True Loves provides an interesting commentary on the complex relationship between love and grief. Phillipa Soo’s charming chemistry with both male leads makes both love stories equally compelling. Go to Full Review

Despite some good acting, One True Loves does not feel believable: the complexities of the situation and nuances of the characters are lost in a mediocre script with a conflict that ends up feeling artificial and forced Go to Full Review

Hope 04/06/2023 the book is always better! I love the movie, but not as much as I thought I would. the scenes were great BUT the dialogs weren't there. I think the movie also moved too fast! but overall I loved it! See more em 04/06/2023 phillipa soo was SO good!!! she’s incredible in every role that she plays and she brought emma to life in such a beautiful way :) See more Jenesis J @MustNotTellLies 6d This movie was awful. Within the first 5 min, it gave off "low budget lifetime movie" vibes. I wasn’t a huge fan of the book, but the writing for this movie adaptation was horrid. The acting was just as bad. Horrible scene transitions took you out of the story. The pace of this movie gave me whiplash. It maybe could have been better as a miniseries. I wanted to see the movie through, but it was painful. We did laugh many times. Not due to comedic relief, but because of how many ridiculous scenes there were and how stupid and unnecessary some of the dialogue was. One last thing I couldn’t stop laughing about, there is a scene where it’s meant to look like it’s autumn, but it actually looks like they just threw some fall-like garland from Michael’s onto some very green trees. It was laughable. Just all around bad. See more Jaco S @Jacoprimv Jan 11 I’m only 20 minutes in and it’s so corny! I feel like I’m watching one of those cheesy instagram ads. It’s so different from the book. Especially Sam’s character. They made him seem insane, there were paparazzi following him, he was popping off on his students, constantly yelling, making cheesy remarks, etc. They made him seem like a complete idiot. NOTHING like the book, it is absolutely horrible. If you want to watch something like this watch Disney channel. See more Tara D Nov 19 I just finished the book and this is a terrible adaptation of it. So much was different. Bad casting, horrible chop job on the storyline and nonexistent chemistry. See more Mery Jun 16 A lack of respect towards the book's characters and the general story. A pitty. See more Read all reviews
