Critics Consensus

Planet 51 squanders an interesting premise with an overly familiar storyline, stock characters, and humor that alternates between curious and potentially offensive.

So inane that not only is adult enjoyment unattainable, even younger audiences will be on to its lack of intelligence and novelty.

Well and truly aimed at kids, Planet 51 is a film they will thoroughly enjoy yet which any accompanying adult will have lots of laughs in too.

Just how much of this will be appreciated by children is questionable, but the film is clearly intended to keep them happy with lashings of colour, movement and cheesy jokes while older, diehard geeks can enjoy all the reference spotting.

Maybe there are a few that can sink even lower than this, but Planet 51 is easily one of the worst animated sci-fi movies on the planet.

While the animation is flawless, the story is severely unoriginal, which is a pity, given the obvious care which went into making this. What intrigues me is why North Americans so often feel the need to slot in a superflous love story. That spoilt it completely for me. Girl is nasty to boy, boy tries to win her back, gets snubbed, then girl sees he has a good heart and sidles back to him because - shallow. Yawn. There's enough material out there for equally interesting female characters rather than having them there as useless, grey dressing. The sets and properties designs are impeccable, and really are the only thing worth watching. Let's just dump the predictability and come up with something fresh in the sequel! If only.....

It has a unique story telling and characters. This film holds a special place in my childhood growing up and upon rematch it brought back some good memories. Of course these are just my opinions.

I watched it on DVD years ago, but it’s a mediocre movie that kicks off with an excellent role-reversal premise, only to quickly lose its way in a sea of cheap jokes and predictable clichés.

I don’t normally write reviews for movies, especially kids movies. I never got to watch this as a kid and now, I understand why. This movie is a must watch
