All seems well for Eric Bowen (Sam Rockwell), wife Amy (Rosemarie DeWitt) and their three children as they move into their new house in the suburbs of Illinois. Soon, the youngest daughter Maddy (Kennedi Clements) begins talking to an imaginary friend, or so the family thinks. It's not long before sinister spirits wreak havoc in the home, holding Maddy captive and forcing the parents to consult a team of parapsychologists who engage the supernatural entities in a battle for the girl's freedom.

Critics Consensus

Paying competent homage without adding anything of real value to the original Poltergeist, this remake proves just as ephemeral (but half as haunting) as its titular spirit.

Though Rockwell and DeWitt give the material their own likable spin, most of the story mechanics will be familiar to anyone who has seen the original Poltergeist.

'Poltergeist' assembles a very gifted group of people to go through another movie's paces, a cover band you wish would just play their own songs.

Director Gil Kenan ruins the pacing with too many half-baked, awkwardly staged horror set pieces, but the cast acquit themselves well enough.

Does 'Poltergeist' reinvent the wheel? Absolutely not. Nor is there anything particularly noticeable about this remake that demands its existence.

The main problem here is the filmmakers haven't done anything significantly new with the material, so there are few surprises worth noting—unless you count how this remake isn't terrible, just pointless.

It was a perfect Halloween watch for my 9 year old daughter and I. This movie is a great stepping stone for younger horror movie enthusiasts. I loved my daughter's reactions This is more a family version if anything.

I liked the modern technology adaptations. The Ghosts have adapted to technology. They are the same ghosts from back in the 1980s and new ghosts.... We are those ghosts... surviving through major technological advances. I grew up in Moline ill... grade school years.. played on the tractors..at the John Deere on black hawk road many times.. and attended the Indian pow wows Black Hawk state park. This all works.

I rarely write reviews, and I had to come on here and say this movie was horrible. I was almost embarrassed to be sitting watching it. There was one scene that was genuinely scary ("Maddy" in the closet , lasted maybe 20 seconds). I was willing to try to get through it but when it started back up again after they got in the car, I literally had to turn the movie off, if I was watching that in the theater I would’ve walked out. Just so horrible. Is 0 stars an option LOL

I feel sorry for the generation who grew up with this as their version of Poltergeist. Do yourselves a favor and watch the original. The only thing scary about this movie is that somebody thought making it was a good idea.

la pelicula puede ser interesante pero siento que abusa mucho de los sustos repentinos que nisiquiera logran dar miedo lo interesante es la parte donde tratan de traer a la niña de vuelta pero lo demas no me termino de gustar
