Critics Consensus

Revenge slices and dices genre tropes, working within an exploitation framework while adding a timely -- yet never less than viscerally thrilling -- feminist spin.

A stunning reinvention of the rape-revenge exploitation film that had me sitting at the edge of my seat first frame to last. Go to Full Review

This first feature from French director Coralie Fargeat is an impactful entry into the rape-revenge subgenre that attempts to shift the focus from the male gaze to the female perspective. Go to Full Review

Revenge is a promising first film and, with any luck, perhaps Fargeat will approach her next film with more of an eye on instilling some dimensionality into her characters to achieve a stronger sense of catharsis. Go to Full Review

Jeffrey P @vanillavoodoo1 1d Flashing neon sex and sunlit art deco interior design always grab attention but the story needs to do something to maintain attention. Unfortunately, this story fails to suspend disbelief early on and never quite regains the attention it had as it goes about a revenge tour we’ve seen before. I do not believe she survives, let alone remains in a condition to carry out her acts of revenge. It becomes an un-immersible tale that can only be negatively picked at. By the time it reaches the final act I can only say "C’mon! Get it over with!" See more Kim C @KClarke95 Jan 21 As indie movies go, this is one of the best I’ve seen. Far too low of a score on this one. Matilda is an absolute vision! See more Michael T @MaddieBreeze Jan 14 This is a horrible, C movie; not even a B movie. Just stupid, mindless, boring, no plot and horrible acting. But what’s craziest is how 100% impossible it would’ve been for this girl to even live at all, let alone embark on a physically demanding revenge spree against the perpetrators. Anyone who gave this a good review is clearly out of their minds. It’s so bad and I am very unhappy that it was given such a high review. Otherwise I would’ve not even wasted 10 minutes of my time with it. 1 million out of 1 million people would’ve died if they fell off a 60 foot cliff and were impaled by a large tree limb. But yet no, this girl not only survives. She extricates herself from the limb and then stalks and kills the three people. See more Duane M @Duanedabath Jan 9 It knows its niche perfectly. It fills that niche precisely. See more Anne G. @anneihilation Dec 27 Fab! No notes. I love how she dived in the pool at the end just like the guy did when he was letting his friend SA her. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. I felt they were saying and no, she doesn’t feel bad for protecting herself.
