What makes it stand out is how it creates a constant sense of unease from the beginning. The pacing is deliberate, but that works in its favor, letting the suspense build naturally. The visuals and sound design also add a cold, eerie tone that stays with you after the movie ends. It’s not just about shocks—it’s about lingering discomfort and curiosity, which is what makes it memorable as a horror film. See more John G @RT87419433 Apr 10 This is one of the scariest movies I've gotten all the way through. I'm no horror fan, so I'm not the intended audience. A simple jump scare will get me every time. My other favorite big scare movie would be the classic Psycho, but I'm not scared by the shower scene for some reason, so much as the revelation of Norman's mother in the basement, which, I can just see it now; it freaks me out every time. I was going to watch another Verbinski movie, A Cure for Wellness, and after I read a plot summary and realized that this was the director of The Ring, I thought maybe not. Maybe at noon on a sunny day with other people I could do it. I can't sit in a darkened room alone at night and watch a Verbinski horror movie without big trouble. First, the tone and atmosphere of the film really amplifies the feeling of utter dread you get watching this movie. The entire time you watch this movie, there is a large presence of disdain and terror looming throughout. The score also complements the rest of the tone very well. Hans Zimmer's use of piano and violin melodies helps add to the somber and horrifying atmosphere of the movie. The whole movie has a green tint to it that gives the film a sickly and almost gross feeling, which continues to add to the unsettling nature and atmosphere of the film. Naomi Watts gives a great performance as our main protagonist, Rachel. The movie does a great job of making you feel like you're unraveling the mystery right alongside her, and I think that is, in part, due to Naomi's great performance. But it's also because of the great director, Gore Verbinski. He's putting a lot of work to create some disturbing imagery. The death of the horse is very dark and scary, and the scene where Samara climbs through the TV is pure nightmare fuel. That scene is still very creepy and unsettling to this day. So, all this is to say that this is an excellent movie. It's scary, disturbing, and unsettling, all in the best way possible. The acting, the cinematography, the score, the tone, everything about this movie is amazing and is one of the best movies in the horror genre. ABSOLUTE CINEMA! See more Read all reviews
