Critics Consensus

Somber, stately, and beautifully mounted, Sam Mendes' Road to Perdition is a well-crafted mob movie that explores the ties between fathers and sons.

A beautiful elegy to a decaying world whose sadness lingers on.

So is Perdition still a must-see? No question. But it's tough to fuss about it much when a picture is this fussy.

Visually, the picture is all of a piece, but it's a self-conscious piece of work -- all dark-toned academic classicism.

Based on a graphic novel – of the non-superhero kind – and directed artistically by Mendes, this is an unusual genre foray, yet a tremendously satisfying tale of vengeance and redemption.

A fantastic exploration of violence, envy, loyalty, and relationships between fathers and sons, done through a superb old-school, throwback gangster film. Tom Hanks, Paul Newman and Daniel Craig are phenomenal. [Full review in Spanish]

Brilliant. Sam Mendes knows how to captivate an audience. This is surely one of his masterpieces. Stellar cast all really convincing in character. Very good storytelling and a side of the genre seldom explored, which is refreshing. Amazing cinematography creates the perfect ambiance. Somber at times, exhilarating at others. Lots of action, drama, emotion, intrigue, suspense and real life feel to it. Very entertaining and gripping

Beautiful cinematography, great direction, and the acting is terrific. Love seeing Tom Hanks in a different type of role as well. It’s a heartbreaking movie but one of my favorites of Hanks’s.

A lot of stars are wasted in a rather uninspired passionless effort that never manages to take flight. Even the action scenes seemed dull
