For the Tibetan mastiffs on Snow Mountain, a dog's life has a simple riff -- guard a peaceful village of sheep from the thuggish wolf Linnux and his rabid pack. To avoid distractions, mastiff leader Khampa forbids all music. However, when his son Bodi discovers a radio that fell from the sky, it takes just a few guitar licks for the lad's fate to be sealed. Wanting to be a rock 'n' roll star, Bodi heads to the city to locate Angus Scattergood, a legendary musician who needs to write a new song.

Critics Consensus

Rock Dog is amiable enough, but its second-tier animation and uninspired story add up to a movie whose meager charms are likely to escape all but the youngest and least demanding viewers.

This Chinese-American production may make decent television for children on a rainy day, but there's not enough thrilling action or comedy for the big screen.

While the voice talent is nothing more than competent, the mediocre animation is good enough and the funny characters are likeable enough that it's not a total loss.

Has impressive designs and a handful of humorous moments, but it's generic storytelling and slow pacing has it be just another average animated film aimed at young audiences.

A completely off-key animated musical. With a generic, low-budget look, unfunny jokes, and forgettable songs, the film fails to deliver the energy and rhythm promised by its rock-music premise. Still, you might find some fun in it.

Rock Dog is a pretty "meh" animated film that follows a dog who dreams of becoming a rock musician. The premise is simple and familiar, and while it has a few entertaining moments, it doesn’t really do anything especially new or memorable with its story. The animation is decent and the music-driven concept has potential, but the overall execution feels fairly standard and predictable. It’s the kind of movie that’s easy to watch once, but just as easy to forget afterward. I know it’s based on the Chinese graphic novel Tibetan Rock Dog by Zheng Jun (which I haven’t read), but the adaptation doesn’t quite stand out on its own. Overall, it’s not bad, just average—hence a solid 5/10.
