Three decades ago, the Rose of Nevada vanished at sea, along with its crew. Now, it has returned. In a remote fishing village, its reappearance is embraced as an auspicious sign, with the local citizens convinced the luck of their economically devastated community may turn, if only the ship sails again. Joining the crew is Nick (George MacKay), desperate to provide for his young family, and Liam (Callum Turner), a mysterious drifter eager to escape his past. After a successful voyage, they return to harbor, only to find that nothing is as they remember it. Shooting on a 16mm Bolex camera and constructing all the sound in post, Mark Jenkin writes, directs, edits and scores a haunting and hallucinatory time-travel mystery that further solidifies him as one of the most distinct, singular artists working in film today. Jenkin conducts a cinematic séance, conjuring a portal into another world that forces us to confront the past and our relationship to it.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Weaving a hypnotic tapestry of bold analogue imagery, spellbinding storytelling, and mesmeric sound, Rose of Nevada reinforces Mark Jenkins as a uniquely singular directorial voice.

Like all Jenkin’s films, it looks extraordinary and the deliberately “tinny” post-sync sound only adds to the sense that you are watching something ancient, meaningful and quite magical. Go to Full Review

Jenkin makes a point of showing us what he wants us to see, rather than allowing us to discover scenes for ourselves. I have been resistant to this approach in the past, but here it works rather well. Go to Full Review

Mark Jenkin is still Mark Jenk-ing: the most stubbornly analogue filmmaker out there has produced another satisfyingly baffling film about Cornish communities and the supernatural tension between past and present. Go to Full Review

The post-sync sound and dialogue add to the off-kilter nature of Rose Of Nevada and that helps make it a very singular and incredibly immersive piece of filmmaking. You won’t find another film quite like it in cinemas this year, I can guarantee you that. Go to Full Review

I’d watch a dozen more films in the same Cornish milieu directed with such flair. Rose of Nevada is a real achievement: a haunting tale of time lost, owed and regained. Go to Full Review

[Rose of Nevada] is Jenkin’s biggest production by far, but still homemade in mainstream terms. Go to Full Review
