After the fiery death of their mother, Joan (Anya Taylor-Joy) and her siblings, driven by a mysterious volcanic prophecy, believe it is their duty to cleanse the Earth. Their radical group hijacks a glamorous charity gala and takes three unlikely hostages for a sacrificial ritual: their hero, movie star Mike Tyler (Chris Evans); their villain, pragmatically cold billionaire Ben Bracken (Vincent Cassel); and their lover, an unlucky performer named Katie (Ambika Mod). As the night descends into chaos, both an inward journey and an outward adventure ensue, where the line between performance and belief, salvation and sacrifice, begins to blur.

Audience Says

Like a black-tie gala gone wrong, Sacrifice has all the right ingredients but fumbles the execution, never allowing its potentially explosive social commentary to erupt, squandering its A-list cast in the process.

Sometimes you can feel the artistry in a movie that doesn’t work. See ‘Sacrifice’ for an example. Go to Full Review

It’s going for eccentric but more than anything it’s just mannered, because it doesn’t believe in its own hokum. It’s too detached to have a point, or even to embrace its pointlessness. Go to Full Review

The film is strangely watchable thanks to the sheer volume of curveballs and cameos, from a slinky Charli XCX performance to John Malkovich as a mad scientist with an indecipherable accent. Go to Full Review

What makes it so galling is that Sacrifice clearly thinks it’s in on the joke. Go to Full Review

This movie has all the parts that should make it an easy win, but an uneven tone and a muddled story keep it from really soaring. Go to Full Review

Purely within [its] various ideological oppositions does the film become intriguing, as perhaps only a medley of ideas this preposterous could reflect our current political moment. Go to Full Review

Fifty T @RT01421419 10 hrs ago So Bad It's Good: A Sacrifice Worth Making (With Friends) The first 15 minutes? Really bad. By the 45-minute mark, something clicked - not because the film improved, but because I realised I was watching a genuine so-bad-it's-good (SBIG) gem. The concept - a movie star, a billionaire, and a nobody taken hostage by a prophecy-driven cult - probably read well on paper. But the execution is atrocious. Corny dialogue, cheap sets that look like a middle school stage production, juvenile direction, and outlandish costumes that belong in a school play... it all adds up to some of the best unintentional comedy I've seen in years. I laughed my guts out at scenes clearly meant to be profound. Evans is clearly having fun lampooning his own image, and Anya Taylor-Joy commits to the cult-leader madness - the only two reasons this gets any points at all. 2/10 honestly... raised to 4/10 purely for SBIG value. Gather friends, lower expectations, and enjoy the disaster. See more Emily D @em1lydear 2 days ago My boyfriend and I personally loved this movie and the depth of it. It is very deep, especially the concluding scene! Very surprised by all of the bad reviews and would definitely advise you to try it out for yourself!! Actors were phenomenal, real-life topics that were touched upon were very accurate (somewhat sad that this is our reality though), maybe a couple slow moments but almost every movie has that! Definitely a movie you have to really pay attention to though because it would absolutely get confusing if you didn’t. Overall, would watch again and will in the future! See more Horror fan 4 @Horrorfan4life 2 days ago This movie had some good moments especially early on at the charity gala. Malkovich was great as joans dad and a believable performance by Anya and Chris. Some of the comedy didn't work for me but the last 20 minutes were silly and good. This was a fresh take on the end of the world scenario and I appreciate it. Tim Treakle See more Angela G @popnotbroth 2 days ago Was not expecting much but ended up being thoroughly entertained, allowing myself to be strung along by the plot and motivations of the characters, just about everyone in it, with the exception of Katie (Ambika Mod) who was chosen as The Lover, were excruciatingly dislikeable in their own ways, especially the egotistical billionaire Ben Bracken (Vincent Cassel). Found a lot of it reminded me of Bugonia for it's unlikely plot and ending, and it's with that in mind that I'm surprised at the bulk of the reviews for this. At just under an hour and a quarter, it doesn't outstay its welcome and is well worth a moment of your time. See more richie T @RT61105553 2 days ago a lot of people have made absolute nonsense with A-list casting , sometimes the the plot is good but the cast isnt , sometimes the cast is good but the plot isnt , though in this case the execution was the Achilles heel, this movie wasnt crap, the ridge between the start and ending climax was my only red flag, but the final point when mike realises, he is trapped in a puppet show society, knowing he cant go back to the world , he would just be the ultimate fraud , with fear and guilt but also freedom to indeed choose , he also jumped, hat part was significant , anyone who didnt like the movie just saw steve rogers and let that predetermine thier thoughts along the watch. Not every movie has to move the world with a boox office hit , ameerican psycho and fight club are just as delussional See more The Honest R @RT29830032 3 days ago A confusing movie with a good start that really fell off at the end. The acting and cast were great and Chris Even’s character had some great moments, particularly when he walks in and everyone is clapping to have him chosen by terrorists when he thinks they are just clapping for him. Unfortunately there are a good few scenes that are just underwhelming, including the ending. The outcome of the movie seemed inevitable from the beginning, nothing about it subverted expectations or was even an interesting display. What did you think about the ending? Make sure to tell us what you think.
