Defying the very notion of good taste, Scary Movie out-parodies the pop culture parodies with a no-holds barred assault on the most popular images and talked-about moments from recent films, television and commercials. The film boldly fires barbs at the classic scenes from Scream, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Blair Witch Project, then goes on to mock a whole myriad of teen movie clichés, no matter the genre.

These gags are hardly the height of inspiration, but it could be that people laugh at them because they're not as pathetic as a character having a penis jabbed through his head like an ice pick.

The Wayans brothers just want to make us laugh... And for the first 20 minutes, they do. After that the gag-rate plummets, and it's a long haul to the credits.

… the original still stands out as a strong horror parody, even with the jokes that don’t land as strongly.

While Scary Movie doesn’t work as a film (for me), it does a couple of cool things that make me get why people keep returning to it.

This parody of classic horror movies doesn't meet expectations. Sex, nudity, crude humor, language, violence.

Is it funny to take the same script from a horror movie and exaggerate the lines word for word so they seem comical? I guess for some it is. There are a few chuckles, but for the most part, you have to be high as Shorty for these "jokes" to land.

For the most part, this film still holds up and has some of the funniest scenes you’ll see in a movie. But what I really appreciated about the film was the mixture of the plots of “Scream” “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “The Usual Suspects”. Found it to be very clever and moved the film along nicely.
