Sydney (Neve Campbell) and tabloid reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) survived the events of the first Scream, but their nightmare isn't over. When two college students are murdered at a sneak preview of Stab, a movie based on the events from the first film, it's clear a copycat killer is on the loose. Sydney and Gail, as well as fellow survivors Deputy Dewey (David Arquette) and Randy (Jamie Kennedy) have to find out who is behind this new murder spree, before they all end up dead.

Critics Consensus

As with the first film, Scream 2 is a gleeful takedown of scary movie conventions that manages to poke fun at terrible horror sequels without falling victim to the same fate.

It's nothing like as inventive as the first Nightmare on Elm Street, but it's much more thoughtful and provocative than most genre horror movies, and more fun.

Good in the first half, begins to fade when new ideas are all used up and then finally staggers exhausted to the finish line.

Scream 2 successfully takes the rules of a sequel - higher body count, bigger set-pieces - and delivers a film that intensifies everything from the self-aware humour and the death scenes to the emotional connections between its cast of characters.

Feels less like the sequel that fans deserved and instead like one rushed into production to strike while the slasher iron was hot. Still, it's not without its charm and scares.

This sequel properly continues the story of the original, lays even more crucial groundwork for its own sequels to play with, and establishes that the Scream formula can be replicated with the right amount of twists and turns.

If you keep expectations tempered, it’s a fun film, and more importantly we get to see these characters again, but in this case, we didn’t have to wait a few decades to see the original cast (those still alive), reunite. Instead they filmed months after the original was released, but before all of the actors went their separate ways. It was fun to see them add layers to the rules and exceptions of said rules within the film. A great cast of incredible young talent, even in a slasher film.

i mean it was a decent enough sequel! it could have been a disaster, with the very similar storyline and the same slasher format from its predecessor (and the whole genre), but it wasn’t. i think the key aspects were the maturity of the characters and the story (all things considered), the university campus setting and the logic behind the killer’s motives as well as the order in which the victims were killed. also, the new characters were interesting and it felt like they had somewhat of a purpose. i know this will be a common for the installments to come, but for now it’s not tiring at all and i’m eager to see how sidney prescott’s life keeps getting tormented by the ghostface(s)!

The thing is... it's hard to look this movie and not to laugh, it supposed to be scary but the way that is made I'm not so sure... anyway as the first one is now a slasher classic this sequel I think it's better.
