Arthur D 01/27/2025 I don't quite know what I was expecting, but it certainly wasnt what I saw. And I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. Sherlock Holmes: Mare of the Night is more than a film—its an experience. The story immerses you in a world where shadows tell secrets, the atmosphere speaks volumes, and every frame feels like a carefully painted canvas. Its a hauntingly intimate portrayal of a Sherlock we rarely see: broken, weary, and grappling with the darkness hes spent a lifetime chasing. The film dares to ask: what happens to a mans soul when its consumed by the evil he fights? Through its masterful use of lighting, cinematography, and an almost dreamlike narrative, were drawn into his torment and taken on a visually stunning and emotionally gripping journey. You quickly forget that this is an independent film—it punches well above its weight, delivering the kind of quality and depth that rivals any blockbuster. Its a love letter to cinema as an art form, a rare gem in todays explosion-filled, story-starved landscape. This isnt just a movie for fans of Sherlock—its a must-see for anyone who appreciates suspense, horror, and the pure artistry of film. Its a bold, beautiful reimagining that lingers with you long after the credits roll. The plot seemed almost without direction and was confusing and repetitive. My tenuous belief in the thing was totally destroyed by the line: "I got some water from the creek." One wonders if the film makers have ever actually read Sherlock Homes, or are aware that it is based in Britain! See more Elto D @RT43101444 4d Violent, gross, confusing, nonsensical, not Sherlock Holmes at all. See more Gary W. @garywrenn Jul 1 So unique…so profound. See more Anton H @RT20347190 May 11 Absolutely fantastic movie!! I cannot stress enough how well this movie is shot and acted for such a small budget. I went back the next day to meet the director and two of the actors just to gush at how good of a job they did. Part 2 is already filmed and being edited, my ticket is already booked. An absolute must see See more Max M @RT40583937 Apr 30 I'm a dyed in the wool Sherlockian (read the books, they're great!) so I'm hard to please. Overall, the plot was not very Canonical, though it could fit in sidewise, if you squint. There was some cheesy horror stuff, but I'd say if you liked any of 1.) Mr. Holmes (Ian McKellen), 2.) The Abominable Bride episode of BBC Sherlock (the Christmas Special set in Victorian London), 3.) 7% Solution, or 4.) horror flicks like Hereditary (2018) or Annihilation (2018) that are cerebral and picturesque, or 5.) you're just a fan of _well-made_ indie films, it will be enjoyable. There's one plot element that I will only discuss with viewers after they watch it (or confirm that they don't intend to ever watch), but that I thought was very interesting in a Sherlockian/Canonical way. I think that's the sign of a well-written film (or at least one with a compelling statement). I recommend you watch it, but I can't tell you you'll love it. The filmmakers are very good at what they do and they turned empty sets into imposing, atmospheric, and haunting spaces through creative use of lighting and mood. The lead actor carried the whole thing. Les Best really puts in a star turn here. The rest of the cast were fine but not stellar—he makes the film (and yes, the beard was real!).
