See more Jacob B @RT89309114 May 14 Wait, is this the ACTUAL first comedy of the "[Genre] Movie" mold predating Scary Movie by 34 years? No, I think the honour of the first of those kinds of spoof films actually goes to Spy Hard. Silent Movie is more of an homage to the movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood rather than a parody film. At the very least, it avoids shoehorning in pop culture references for potential new IPs, an issue those later films would eventually devolve into. But if you're curious what I think about the film...yep, Silent Movie is pretty good. Probably one of the more underrated Mel Brooks films. Great comedic timing, well-choreographed sequences, actors playing themselves doing a good job in self-deprecating roles and Brooks being truly ahead of his time: making meta movies before they were cool. How else can you describe a movie about Mel Brooks/Funn pitching the first silent film in 40 years and getting the biggest actors of the time to be in it to persuade the Studio Executive to greenlight it? Of course, I figure the back-to-back hits of Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein gave Brooks considerably more clout in real life than his self-insert in this movie but it doesn't change the fact that the main selling point inside and outside the film is the fact that it's bereft of dialogue in an age where such films are deemed obsolete. All in all, a silly yet fun comedy that needs more love.
