Nim T @nimtse 3 days ago Douglas Trumbull has a unique style in science fiction films. Previously, I watched Brainstorm, which I found even more captivating. This film captivated me through Joan Baez's singing and the use of robots in outer space to enhance the technological advances of the time. Bruce Dern did a fine job as Lowell, but the story offers very little social interaction. The special effects added some intelligence, but it was funny when Dern's character focused more on fixing the robots than the garden itself. The way isolation hits in outer space is worth memorizing as a possible theme from the movie. I also appreciate the use of actors in the robot costumes, which makes the robotic movements feel realistic. See more Randal S @RT96217402 Sep 7, 2026 This movie needs to be required viewing for everyone who doesn't appreciate our environment and our attempts to protect it. Bruce Dern is Lowell, a crew member on the valley forge, a spaceship carrying earth's last forests. Things go horribly awry. As far as I know, the only way to watch this unless you can find a dvd is to rent it through a streaming service, but it is well worth the four bucks See more Robert P @Superbad Sep 7, 2026 Silent Running = A 3.5 star Movie See more David R @RT41971929 Feb 8, 2026 This movie is absolute trash. Hippie vegan sticks it to The Man by killing the rest of the crew and launching his carrots in spaaaaaace off before they can be destroyed for reasons the movie refuses to address. Special effects were probably marginal in 1972, but Dern’s dramatic over-acting makes Shatner look like he does Shakespeare. Seriously, I’ve seen better acting in a high school play, especially since most of the cast dies within minutes. Plot is paper thin, zero character development. Heck the rabbits get more character development than the cast. Massive plot holes, no explanation of what the other ships want or are doing. Nothing makes sense. And, OMG, the soundtrack is worse than a root canal. By 30 minutes in I’m hoping Dern’s character gets eaten by a feral hog to end my pain. And people think Star Wars was based on this??? I’m 100% convinced the people that consider this a cult classic are perpetually stoned hippie protestors. Watching grass grow is more entertaining. Other than Bruce Dern's performance, the sfx and the little robots, and Joan Baez songs, this just isn't that great of a movie. There are far too many plot holes; if there's commercial space travel, why not put the forests on the moon and make them a tourist attraction? How does the earth NOT need it's eco-systems? Why blow them up, rather than, again, make them a tourist attraction? An all right movie, but doesn't deserve either cult status or the overblown reputation its gathered. See more abel p @RT69054841 Apr 13, 2025 I first saw "Silent Running" in 1978 at a science fiction movie convention and I've been a big fan of it ever since. Dern's portrayal of this guy was amazing. He caught the essence of a man whose been pushed too far and sees the destruction of his life's work as unacceptable. This movie is so much relevant at this time in history than when it was released. With the climate change the Earth is going through, people should be watching it. This movie was unavailable for a while, and when Arrow released it in 4K I knew that it was going into my collection of physical media. See more Read all reviews
