Hector I @Hector1184BC 10h This is a paranoid thriller typical of the 1970s, in the vein of 3 Days of the Condor or The Conversation. Brian De Palma’s second feature doesn’t yet fully show his later signature style. The music stands out—classical, perhaps overly so—though a Goblin score might have added a darker dimension. The story follows a young Black man on a voyeurism-themed reality show. After being invited to dinner by one of the participants, he ends up at her apartment, only to be murdered the next morning by her slightly psychopathic twin sister. A liberal journalist witnesses the crime and sets out to find the body and unravel the mystery. Visually, the film impresses, particularly the murder scene, evoking elements later seen in Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers. Themes of psychology and 1970s experiments, including released mental patients and sinister institutions, are central. On the plus the shots and performances were great. See more Blu B @RT43513976 Aug 7 A Classic Horror Flick. The music is good but it can feel a bit cheesy and ripped out of a 50's B Movie and just feel out of place. Other than that, everything is really well done here. It's heavily influenced by Hitchcock and has the style of a Polanksi flick. The flashback in the end is done in such a creative black and white fever dream arthouse type way and really makes you feel like your in a nightmare. The plot gets a bit insane but is really sick and twisted too. While there is gore there isn't that much besides 1-2 kills. The horror mainly comes from the ideas and delivery which this does great at. Solid direction by DePalma who is still devloping his craft but is very creative at times. This has a lower budget Halloween feel to it. The plot requires a bit of suspense of disbelief but it's so sick and well done that's not a tall order. Also it does pull a Psycho and change main characters early on after a very quirky game show opening. The Reporter is good but not as interesting a character as Kidder or her lover. Kidder is really good and the best thing acting wise but she sort of diappears for a while. Those minor issues aside this is really well done and is something any fan of the director, any actors in this, horror especially psychlogical, and thriller/murder mystery fans should check out.
