As a senior in high school, Joan Huang idolizes winning Prom Queen as the embodiment of popularity, beauty and the ultimate form of acceptance into American life. It’s only the plot that runs into trouble, since it leads 'Slanted' to carefully tackle some serious issues, but overlook or airball some others. When viewed from different angles the film is either a fascinating success or a gigantic misfire.

Informed by Wang’s own life growing up Chinese Australian, "Slanted" nails the micro-aggressions, body dysmorphia and desire to belong that can make coming of age while being "other" its own perplexing kind of hell.

While lived experience probably inspired writer and director Amy Wang’s first feature, it easily feels like a scripted feature adaptation of political scientist Andrew Hacker’s "Two Nations: Black and White, Separate, Hostile, Unequal" (1992)

Amy Wang’s feature directorial debut works much better than expected. The film does a solid job of illustrating the costs of one's actions and the pressure of wanting to ‘fit in.' Good performances.

Part social commentary and part horror filmk but doesn't break new ground. Characters are kind of one-dimensional but the female leads both Shirley Chen and McKenna Grace both work well as the dual main character. Give it a shot as a matinee. Definitely worth streaming
