As a senior in high school, Joan Huang idolizes winning Prom Queen as the embodiment of popularity, beauty and the ultimate form of acceptance into American life. In her relentless pursuit for the crown, she undergoes an experimental racial transformation to become White and win Prom Queen. However, what she thought was a dream come true soon reveals itself to be an emotional and physical nightmare. "Slanted" offers a searing and unapologetically satirical view on race and the uncomfortable journey of learning to love yourself and your culture.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Slanted blends genre thrills and pointed commentary on racial identity into an daring body horror parable, even if its occasionally unfocused script keeps writer-director Amy Wang's provocative vision from fully landing.

Audience Says

Slanted may be uneven, but its compelling social themes and memorable performances make for a sufficiently visceral body horror outing.

It’s only the plot that runs into trouble, since it leads 'Slanted' to carefully tackle some serious issues, but overlook or airball some others. When viewed from different angles the film is either a fascinating success or a gigantic misfire. Go to Full Review

Informed by Wang’s own life growing up Chinese Australian, "Slanted" nails the micro-aggressions, body dysmorphia and desire to belong that can make coming of age while being "other" its own perplexing kind of hell. Go to Full Review

The whole film is quite meek in its approach, timidly dipping its toes into camp, satire, cultural criticism, and body horror, but never fully embracing any of them. Go to Full Review

While lived experience probably inspired writer and director Amy Wang’s first feature, it easily feels like a scripted feature adaptation of political scientist Andrew Hacker’s "Two Nations: Black and White, Separate, Hostile, Unequal" (1992) Go to Full Review

The film never quite matches the promise or the level of body horror it hints at, or the thorough scrutiny of privilege and how minorities are left paying the price.  Go to Full Review

Amy Wang’s feature directorial debut works much better than expected. The film does a solid job of illustrating the costs of one's actions and the pressure of wanting to ‘fit in.' Good performances. Go to Full Review

Fransheska S 3d It was alright, pretty much felt like I got the whole movie through the previews… not much else beyond that. It was a simple way to blow 1.5 hours of my day but tbh I almost fell asleep an hour in… See more Laurie B 3d Excellent acting, the cast well placed and the story line engaging especially with the twist in the end. Characters are kind of one-dimensional but the female leads both Shirley Chen and McKenna Grace both work well as the dual main character. Give it a shot as a matinee.
