Big Enos (Pat McCormick) wants to drink Coors at a truck show, but in 1977 it was illegal to sell Coors east of the Mississippi River without a permit. Truck driver Bo "Bandit" Darville (Burt Reynolds) agrees to pick up the beer in Texas and drive it to Georgia within 28 hours. When Bo picks up hitchhiker Carrie (Sally Field), he attracts the attention of Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason). Angry that Carrie will not marry his son, Justice embarks on a high-speed chase after Bandit.

For me at least, the world of "Smokey" is stranger than the outer space of Star Wars... "Smokey" may be faintly memorable as the absolute pit of Jackie Gleason's career.

An overly slick - but not terribly well written - farce comedy about the joys of dangerous driving. The film was directed by a stunt coordinator, so the point of the film is a setup, the characters are thin and a lot of scenes looks like television advertising. Good music and well-coordinated vehicle stunts save this film from being a flop, and Burt Reynolds' mixture of clean-cut toothpaste smile and tight-red-shirt sleazy screen appeal.

A thunderous all-American classic. This is a movie for those wanting some fun and good vibes. Is it deep? Not very. Is it fun? Hell fuckin yeah it is. Overall, the casting is fantastic, with some proper American heroes of the big screen (and the country scene) coming together to bring this daredevil cast of bootleggers and over-eager Texas cops to life. The jokes are not lost on anyone, with some funny one-liners that add charisma and personality to the characters, and some absolutely iconic lines scattered throughout. The visual interest of this film was also not skimped out on, with some of the shots genuinely looking fantastic and impressive even today (see the driving sequence which accompanies Jerry Reed's fantastic "Eastbound and Down") Overall? It's a fun, well-casted classic American comedy.
