What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though it hints at the absurdity to come in later installments, The Spy Who Loved Me's sleek style, menacing villains, and sly wit make it the best of the Roger Moore era.

Roger Moore put an unusual goofy spin on Bond, which didn’t always work in the overall vision. However, The Spy Who Loved Me is likely his best film that only shows glimpses of how truly outrageous his era can get. Go to Full Review

Yaaron R @KompetenterMedi 1h Underwater spectacle, surface-level nonsense The Spy Who Loved Me has some fun ideas, especially the submarine car and the underwater setting, and the gadget side of Bond finally feels like it is improving. Unfortunately, the film still collapses under shallow writing. The villain is "evil because evil," killing allies just to look ruthless, which makes the whole scheme feel irrational. Bond’s romance scenes are not only dated, they are badly written and take up too much space, and he keeps getting caught, killing any sense of competence. The hand to hand action is faster than earlier entries but still unconvincing, with sped up footage that looks silly. Jaws comes off more cartoonish than threatening. A few cool water-based moments cannot save the rest. See more Alejandro E @Alex970 4d Of all the times Roger Moore played James Bond, this may well be the best. Why? Because it doesn't borrow from previous instalments or unrelated films. The action scenes are justified enough to enjoy with the essential popcorn. See more gungi @WhatWhere 5d A strong opening to the film. But it gradually loses momentum, jumps too hastily from one place to the next and is overly ambitious. Perhaps the most exciting character is the wordless, Frankenstein-like monster called Jaws, underlining that plot and characters remain rather lacklustre and uninteresting. Barbara Bach's character in particular, who is supposed to be a fairly strong and intelligent figure, remains a wasted opportunity. She is a pushover and another damsel in distress who ends up succumbing to Bond's charms. Regardless of the fact that he is the murderer of her lover, three weeks later she cannot resist the allure and attraction that Bond signifies. In essence, this is the film's strongest message: in the midst of Anglo-Soviet peace efforts, Bond is the figure who seals the "partnership deal" by "'conquering"' the Soviet spy. And as the song fades in and announces the ending , the chorus sings: Nobody does it better.
