The crew of the Starship Enterprise returns home after an act of terrorism within its own organization destroys most of Starfleet and what it represents, leaving Earth in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Capt. James T. Kirk leads his people on a mission to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction, thereby propelling all of them into a game of life and death.

Critics Consensus

Visually spectacular and suitably action packed, Star Trek Into Darkness is a rock-solid installment in the venerable sci-fi franchise, even if it's not as fresh as its predecessor.

Pulling off the trick of being both irreverent and Trekkie-pleasing, JJ Abrams effortlessly orchestrates massive action set pieces, a galaxy of 'cor look at that' CGI effects and well-modulated character scenes.

The socio-political commentary of 'Star Trek Into Darkness' is about as sophisticated as you'd expect from scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtman, who also wrote the first two 'Transformers' movies.

On the heels of a massively successful franchise relaunch, Star Trek into Darkness lets itself down with too much of a familiar thing.

Even if all of those ridiculous lens flares annoy the film snob deep down inside, you have to agree that J.J. Abrams has a nose for action and eye for spectacle.

It might not hold a candle to the best the franchise has to offer, though it serves as a worthy follow-up to the universe introduced in 2009, thanks to an entirely charming cast and ambitious visual effects.

Honestly, a lot better than I thought it was going to be. For me, this was a much bigger improvement over the first movie because we get to know more about the characters in this alternate timeline. For one thing, we discover that Captain Kirk and Spock would give anything to save each other’s lives because they started out as great friends at Starfleet Academy. Speaking of which, you can tell that the acting from both Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto is a lot better this time around. However, the actor who really makes this movie is Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan. His performance in this movie was absolutely CAPTIVATING. I think I almost got shivers every single time he was on screen because his portrayal of the character was just that GOOD. On top of that, the action is fun, there are tense moments of suspense, there’s some good humor that I appreciated, and Michael Giacchino’s score actually improves over the first movie. Rating: 10/10.

Gleefully scavenging familiar moments from prior iterations of the brand, Into Darkness is consequently an uneven sequel, bigger and louder, sacrificing brains and character for action spectacle with none of the accrued emotional heft. It can be exciting, handsome and frequently funny, but it's also dramatically over-engineered and creatively timid; it goes exactly where you think it would yet still feels satisfying. That all being said, while Into Darkness certainly doesn't have the charm or the heart of Abrams' first, it nonetheless serves as a somewhat worthy follow-up, and it gives enough fuel to the franchise to warrant its existence. Undeniably thrilling on its own terms, yet terrified to move too far away from what came before.
