mika H @Mika-Am Oct 25, 2026 Susan Sarandon and Ed Harris are great! I don't like the story. I would have preferred it if the girlfriend got sick and Ed and Susan rekindled their love while taking care of her. It makes older women fear for their future. I wanted to punch Julia's character's face in (not that I'd ever do anything like that in real life - not even close) and had no respect for Ed's character. Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts are wonderful together, especially as you watch the resentment and jealousy between their characters slowly turn into understanding and respect. Their relationship and the way they eventually work together for the sake of the kids is really the heart of the movie. Ed Harris is excellent too, bringing warmth to a father caught between two women he loves in very different ways while trying to do what’s best for his children. What I loved most is that nobody is really the villain. They’re imperfect people dealing with love, divorce, jealousy, parenthood, and eventually loss. By the end, it becomes a beautiful story about putting differences aside and realizing there can be room in a family for more than one kind of love. Great performances and a movie with a lot of heart. See more H Y. @RT11952587 May 17, 2026 Beautiful, touching movie. See more Kaye A @RT74092005 May 16, 2026 Heart felt movie. All actors are good. See more Rob G @RT25140108 May 10, 2026 Stepmom is a well-acted tear-jerker that suffers from a regressive view of the family. The film treats childcare as an exclusively female battleground, forcing Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon into a bitter competition over domestic duties while Ed Harris’s father figure gets a "free pass" from any actual parenting. By framing Isabel’s career as a hurdle to being a "good woman" and Jackie’s over-parenting as a spiritual calling, the movie ignores the father's responsibility entirely. It’s a glossy drama that suggests a woman’s only true value is found in the nursery, leaving the men to watch from the sidelines. In addition to its regressive gender roles, the film’s "Thanksgiving Pageant" scene serves as a jarring example of 1990s cultural blindness. By having the children dress in "Construct-A-Native" costumes and perform a sanitized, storybook version of the holiday, the movie completely erases the historical reality of colonial genocide.
