Critics Consensus

While Taraji P. Henson puts in a powerful performance, STRAW is ultimately too monotonous with miserableness to sustain its dramatic premise.

“Straw” has all the feels it wants and little of the art it needs. Go to Full Review

Henson — so deeply committed to her character’s emotional cratering — still makes us care. Go to Full Review

Straw isn’t the worst Perry film, but it suffers from the same problems that plague all of his projects. The narrative is chock full of heavy-handed metaphors, fussy plotting and strained drama. The best parts of the film can be attributed to Henson. Go to Full Review

Straw is Tyler Perry Black trauma porn dialed up to one hundred and fifty percent. The movie is filled with Black actors who all need to make a paycheck. Go to Full Review

Taraji tackles this role like every mother who has ever lived is channeled through her. It is the best performance of hers in years. She’s a revelation and deserves the praise. Go to Full Review

El T @RT47499702 3d I was wondering why it was called 'Straw' until I remembered the cliché, "This is my last straw." It costs nothing to be kind and we do not know what a person was already dealing with just to escalate their emotions to the point where it may seem that in the end, they are the problem. See more Maya H @RT88665290 Apr 14 dogshit movie worst plot ever, everything literally couldve been avoided if the main character didnt make the worst decisions possible and just was a normal functioning person with like more than 80 iq See more Aiden A @Truffles.44 Apr 3 Straw is an absolute masterpiece, though the show has a vey monotone and depressing theme all the way through it it’s backed up by its acting. The only part that I thought brought it down was the plot twist at the end, the idea that the daughter is dead means that all the talk about what she will be like with her mother gone, surmounted to nothing, quite underwhelming but overall a eye opening movie which shows the struggles people are going through that you might not see See more Hunter O. @RT98788102 Mar 28 The movie could’ve had some minor adjustments but the emotion and delivery was phenomenal. Brought me to tears and not many movies can do that. It’s very hard for me nowadays to consistently pay attention to random movies but u could not stop watching for one moment! See more Kayla W. @RT49342972 Mar 26 This movie was absolutely amazing. It hit where no one else dares to go and if they do they can’t actually give us the feels as this movie did. It was a huge plot twist I didn’t expect. See more Leigh R @Leighbird Feb 6 Taraji P. Henson is a force to be reckoned with regards to her art. She is absolutely amazing and the film is lucky to have her. The entire cast consists of three amazing actors including Sherri Shepard and Teyana Taylor, which are all convincing; however, unfortunately this film has a heart that's barely beating. The film is just not good. I certainly wanted it to be incredible. I was routing for it considering the amazing talent, I'll just have to focus on these three amazing women because, that's all this film has going for it. It took me a week to watch it in it's entirety because it was so disappointing, predictable, and boring. Gah! So bummed. See more Read all reviews
