03/17/2022 First from what I know about the director, this is probably the best work he's done. But with that said, that doesn't mean this movie is great. I don't think it's terrible, maybe not even bad. The premise is fun, and it's got some really talented actors involved like Danielle Harris, Adam West, Doug Jones, Christine Lakin, and Tommy Lister Jr. Most of the actors in this movie do their best to work with the cheesy material, especially Lakin as Red, who honestly is a scene-stealer. The outfit for the villain Cretan looks pretty decent, and honestly most of the outfits look good. And they managed to get some use out of the 1960's Batmobile by turning it into an "air-conditioned taxi". The jokes are... a different story. I know that they're supposed to be bad, but most of them ARE just bad. Not even ironically good. Some are! The stuff with Will Powers and his burgeoning midlife crisis could be funny, as could Felicia Freeze's total frustration with the group. And when the one member of the team killed himself by accident, that was so surprising that it was funny. The sound effects are hit-or-miss. They went kind of berserk with cartoon sound effects and managed to use them on almost every character by the end. If you like kooky sound effects you'll enjoy this aspect, but if not... you're gonna be really angry lol. Tweety birds when people are knocked on the head (Ed and Cretan), whistles when people move really quickly (Felicia, Will), the famous car horn AWOOGA sound when Red grabs Ed's junk... it's quite a bit. And some of the actors, like Lakin as Red and Justin Whalin as Ed, really run with it and try to make it work with their slapstick (in Whalin's case) or their seductive scenes (Lakin). The main issue with the movie for me, is how they try to twist it into some evangelical message, which is ludicrous. If they had played it off that Ed praying and Cretan getting knocked out was coincidental, and that he really didn't have powers, that would not only be less heavy-handed, not only be more funny, but would also send a more powerful message, that even if someone doesn't have powers they can be a hero. Idk it was just strange. Just stick to the premise of a parody of superhero movies with this cast, that alone is a golden idea. You don't need to try and cram religion into it. But anyway, I guess I'd say the scenes with Red are worth watching, the scenes with Felicia Freeze are worth watching, the scenes with Will Powers are worth watching... and that's pretty much it. Better than Zoom, but nowhere near Sky High. I was very very very excited to see it. I love superheroes and I love the cast. But this film was simply terrible. It was beyond cheesy and just terribly written all around.
