Times are tough for Kozo (Jun Kunimura) and his family, who suffer through a meager existence in a small Japanese village where, for years, there has been little work. Already cramped in tight living quarters with a number of relatives, including his wife (Yasuyo Kamimura), daughter and mother, Kozo tries, but fails, to ignite the town's dire economic situation.
