For AJ (Nell Barlow) planning a gap year trip to knit jumpers for elephants is much more appealing than spending a week with her family at a British Seaside Holiday Park. Yet, she finds herself on a four-hour car journey to the Dorset coast with her mum Tina (Jo Hartley, THIS IS ENGLAND) and little sister Dayna. Met by older sister Lucy (Sophia di Martino, LOKI), and her boyfriend Steve (Samuel Anderson, DR WHO), AJ expects this to be 'a week of hell'. That is, until she lays her eyes on the resident lifeguard Isla (Ella-Rae Smith) and is instantly infatuated. Winner of the audience award at the Glasgow Film Festival and two British Independent Film Awards, Marley Morrison's debut SWEETHEART captures the ups and downs of the quintessential British family holiday.

Critics Consensus

Smart, funny, and wonderfully well-written, Sweetheart serves as a delightful reminder that a standard-issue story outline can be filled with fresh details.

If “Sweetheart” shows its share of evergreen teenage turmoil, the writer and director Marley Morrison also cannily observes details that feel specific to young people today.

Sweetheart is a funny, achingly real slice of familial drama that speaks with the ease and authority of someone who perhaps experienced a summer much like the one presented on screen.

Morrison's enchanting comedy makes something convincingly British of a form that the American indie cadre has exploited to near exhaustion.

Sweetheart is like summertime. It’s easy to love and fleeting, yet somehow eternal. Even though the film takes place in the present day, it has a timeless quality to it.

You might think that a week on a British caravan park sounds boring? But actually, sometimes, it can be great fun. Just like this movie!
