Being stranded on a deserted island leaves young Hank (Paul Dano) bored, lonely and without hope. As a rope hangs around his neck, Hank prepares to end it all, until he suddenly spots a man (Daniel Radcliffe) laying by the shore. Unfortunately, he is dead and quite flatulent. Using the gassy body to his advantage, Hank miraculously makes it back to the mainland. However, he now finds himself lost in the wilderness, and dragging the talking corpse named Manny along for the adventure.

A lonely man (Hank), in his next-to-last breath, gives birth to a dead body (Manny). Like any mother who commutes the burden of unfulfilled-expectations to a child, the relationship between them slowly and painfully transforms. Hank imparts to Manny a naive version of the world, filling him with tall tales of true love and daily gratitudes. His stories and lies progressively animate the corpse, which learns to respond to it’s own name, string vowels together, and sit without support. Hank finds purpose and self-worth through this giving-of-life, and begins to use the dead body as a vessel to guide him out of depression. As Manny develops consciousness, he questions Hank about the norms informing the backbone of society. Hank grapples with the age-old dilemma of parenting--how to best equip kin for an illogical and unforgiving world, without forever dimming that tiny light for which you are responsible? Overall, the film is relatable to anyone who has ever been a parent, or child.

This is a very weird absurd film, lots of heart felt moments and some really strange comedy, the ending is ???? but I would recommend it. Just don't expect all the answers, or this to make sense - just suspend those parts of the brain which pick holes in sequences and plot and enjoy the ride, it's a fairly unique experience.
