A thoughtful and insightful documentary that shows the power of communication as well as depicting the aftermath of a traumatic event and the effects of cult mentality. Go to Full Review

The Atoning almost becomes arthouse horror, but there's enough B-movie sensibilities about the piece for it to appeal to horror fans of all sorts. Go to Full Review

Who knew that a well-made, small-scale horror fable could be as cautionary to the human condition as mischievous whispers are to the dark? Go to Full Review

A commendable try at portraying different simultaneous worlds in one film. But, in the end, too ambitious. Go to Full Review

The Atoning is unoriginal and underwhelming at every turn. Even the climatic moments are anti-climatic. Go to Full Review

Less sophisticated than it seems to think, The Atoning is nevertheless an effective little fable whose underlying horrors are very much a part of the real world. Go to Full Review

Simon P @RT92211519 Apr 25 No idea why this is a 67%. It is literally the Goosebumps book 'The Ghost Next Door. Also the movie 'The Others' did it better. See more Claudio C @Claudio666 Apr 25 The Atoning (2017) Pending Issues (12,410 – 24 Apr 2026 – Claudio Carvalho) Vera (Virginia Newcomb) intends to leave home with her son Sam (Cannon Bosarge) and they are waiting for her brother Danny (Chris Bosarge). However, they stay and her estranged husband Ray (Michael LaCour) stays with them. Out of the blue, they are haunted by apparitions and Ray researches what might have been happening. Until the day they hear Charon Lilith (Dorothy Weems) and learn what is happening and who the apparitions are. "The Atoning" (2017) is an extremely low budget movie by Michael Williams with a story that will satisfy the spiritists. The plot is well developed, but the acting of some key characters is weak. The mystery is solved in the beginning and could have been prolonged. Virginia Newcomb holds the film with a good performance. My vote is five. A respectable attempt at an idea perhaps too big for the budget. Even practical effects can be better than just a costume. I'm sure there's a way to have something dripping off of the monsters or at least a fog machine. Still, Virginia Newcome and Cannon Bosarge impress as the mother and son. I would like to see this remade with a larger budget. Certainly one of the better low budget horrors. See more angela @RT48545199 12/11/2022 Everything was fine until the psychic/medium came on. I suddenly thought I was watching an R.L. Stein Goosebumps episode. Maybe I'll watch the rest some other day. See more michael p @Labspeciman 09/07/2022 This movie could have been something. Then it went off course to try and explain what all happened in the first place. It was alright. But there are better horror movies.
