Jonathan K @RT02305179 Dec 27, 2024 A very clever, funny film. I understand German and some Yiddish and speak Hebrew so it was easy for me to follow in its original format. Some of the scenes were moving, others were hilarious. The film is about the perils, joys and discoveries of a young man leaving the strictures of a tight-knit religious family and community. The ending was unsatisfactory because it left you in suspense, not knowing what the heck happened next. Apart from that, brilliant. See more

Jul 23, 2022 Motti's awakening comes at the expense of the female characters in this film who are reduced to misogynistic tropes. Whether that's Motti's mother, a caricature of the overbearing Jewish mother, which is self-hating and antisemitic in the screen writer's portrayal. Or the young religious women of his community, who are meek and asexual; and therefore, useless to Motti's sexual awakening. Secular Jewish women and Israeli women are depicted as promiscuous and exotic. And Laura, Motti's gentile love interest, is called a shiksa. An offensive and derogatory name. Motti's shallow rebellion doesn't focus on his rejection of tradition but on his rejection of women; producing a static and one-dimensional story. See more
