Paratrooper commander Colonel Mathieu (Jean Martin), a former French Resistance fighter during World War II, is sent to 1950s Algeria to reinforce efforts to squelch the uprisings of the Algerian War. There he faces Ali la Pointe (Brahim Haggiag), a former petty criminal who, as the leader of the Algerian Front de Libération Nationale, directs terror strategies against the colonial French government occupation. As each side resorts to ever-increasing brutality, no violent act is too unthinkable.

Johnathon W @Hoppynsc Feb 26 Superb war film that ranks as one of the best ever, thanks to crisp realism in front of and behind the camera. The cast is excellent, consisting of mostly non-actors, with the only real standout being Jean Martin as Col. Mathlieu, a dedicated soldier who commits to his mission with prison, even if he is aware of the larger political problems. Behind the camera, writer/director Gillo Pontecorvo crafts a crisply thrilling film about the Algerian War, and while it does take the side of the Algerians over France, he doesn't shy away from the brutality on both sides, from the French troops using tortue to the Algerians bombing innocent civilians. He also shoots it in a documentary style, further adding to the realism. The result is one of the best and most influential war movies ever.
