When the actions of Jason Bourne spark a fire that threatens to burn down decades of research across a number of secret intelligence agencies, Eric Byer (Edward Norton), the man who built the programs, decides he must sacrifice one of them: Outcome. Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner), one of Outcome's six agents, and research scientist Marta Shearing (Rachel Weisz) go on the run when Byer targets them for termination. But Cross proves to be a far deadlier target than Byer realizes.

Critics Consensus

It isn't quite as compelling as the earlier trilogy, but The Bourne Legacy proves the franchise has stories left to tell -- and benefits from Jeremy Renner's magnetic work in the starring role.

The Bourne Legacy exists only as a failed attempt to squeeze more juice out of a once-reputable franchise, which is hardly a legacy worth leaving.

The Bourne Legacy is quieter, slower, more sobering. The conspiracy is bigger and darker than we thought.

When it’s all over, and we reflect on what was accomplished in The Bourne Legacy within the larger Bourne mythos, it’s clear this entry is a superfluous, if very entertaining ride.

While Gilroy does occasionally struggle matching up with earlier films, the movie definitely has its moments that nicely falls in line with the series.

The performances of the two leads are brilliant. Rachel is superb. The love the pace the story and the action scenes. A classic and very worthy in the series of Bourne. Bring them both back. M

IMO Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz were outstanding. Especially Rachel. Also enjoyed Donna Murphy's small part. I realize I'm late to the dance with this review but I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.

The low rating of this film reflects general frustration with the concept of a Bourne-less addition to the franchise and a reflexive rejection of an expanded Treadstone universe, but the movie itself is well executed, well acted, and a fun, compelling watch. I predict an eventual “fresh” consensus once the emotional dust has settled. Ratings are a funny and fickle phenomenon. Also, Jeremy Renner with a high powered, scoped piece is proving to be movie gold.

The Bourne Legacy has an interesting idea in expanding the program mythology beyond Jason Bourne. Showing that Treadstone and Blackbriar were part of a larger system gives the franchise a broader conspiracy, and the enhanced-agent angle shows how many people were being used, controlled, and discarded. Jeremy Renner gives Aaron Cross a solid center. He is more verbal, desperate, and emotionally accessible than Bourne, while still being highly capable. Rachel Weisz also gives the movie needed humanity as Marta, a smart and terrified doctor realizing the world she worked in is far more dangerous than she understood. The Alaska opening gives the film a rugged, isolated start, and the Manila finale adds scale, even if the motorcycle chase runs too long. The problem is that Jason Bourne’s absence is impossible to ignore. Cross’s medication hook is interesting, but it does not hit as hard as Bourne’s identity and guilt. There is plenty to like, but it feels like a shadow of the trilogy.
