Critics Consensus

The Dead Lands doesn't add anything new to the primeval quest genre, but its battle scenes boast enough visceral thrills to carry viewers through the more mundane moments.

Powers away relentlessly and soon becomes numbing - except when Makoare waggles his tongue in traditional warrior manner, which is genuinely a fearsome thing to behold. Go to Full Review David Jenkins Little White Lies May 29, 2015

By the final stretch, the combat is pure tedium, with each skuffle filmed and edited in the same way each time and the makers refusing to scale things up in the name of idle spectacle. Go to Full Review Wendy Ide The Times (UK) May 28, 2015

The Dead Lands is a distinctive tale that blends coming-of-age with some muscular action sequences. Go to Full Review Graeme Tuckett The Post NZ Sep 9, 2021

Charles S @RT48597959 Sep 5, 2024 Seemed like the plot is basically ripped off from Apocalypto, but the choreography and Maori faces in the fight scenes made it pretty unique and entertaining. See more robert s @RT89063569 Aug 15, 2024 I enjoyed seeing aspects of an ancient culture. This show was enjoyable and incorporated Maoi religious themes into the story. A nice change from the US networks cookie cutter shows about the police, courts, doctors, etc. See more Feb 17, 2021 Uneven and with little variety in the action scenes See more Dec 3, 2020 After he sees his father murdered before his eyes and the rest of his tribe slaughtered by another tribe, a young Maori warrior travels to the forbidden Deadlands to seek the help of a legendary warrior to help him exact revenge on those who wiped out his tribe. The Deadlands is a primal coming of age story set against the background of tribal loyalties and vengeance. A cast of mostly unknowns push the story forward at a fast pace as we follow the two leads on a chase across a desolate land to exact their vengeance. The fight sequences are visceral and well choreographed and it's certainly unlike anything else I have seen recently.
