Hazel Grace Lancaster, a 16-year-old cancer patient, meets and falls in love with Gus Waters, a similarly afflicted teen from her cancer support group. Hazel feels that Gus really understands her. The reason that The Fault in Our Stars works so well is that its main draw (the teenage love story) is tied so expertly to its emotional core (Hazel's relationship with her parents).

I want to applaud the people that created THE FAULT IN OUR STARS for being faithful to the subject matter. Cancer is a major issue in our world today, and they definitely deserve a lot of praise and recognition for making this story a true blessing to those who need it most. Well done.

It suffers from a tendency towards unnecessary literary pretension, where the end result is some awkward and questionable subplots, but otherwise a largely successful adaptation that delivers some earnest and emotionally honest portrayal of coming-of-age teenage love in the shadow of terminal illness, and that's what separates The Fault in Our Stars apart from the rest of the genre.
