In the Southwest during the Civil War, a mysterious stranger, Joe (Clint Eastwood), and a Mexican outlaw, Tuco (Eli Wallach), form an uneasy partnership -- Joe turns in the bandit for the reward money, then rescues him just as he is being hanged. When Joe's shot at the noose goes awry during one escapade, a furious Tuco tries to have him murdered. The men re-team abruptly, however, to beat out a sadistic criminal and the Union army and find $20,000 that a soldier has buried in the desert.

Ennio Morricone’s soundtrack is widely regarded as the best of his career, with the moody, two-note flute melody... an instantly recognisable refrain that is folksy and avant-garde at the same time. Go to Full Review

All three arrive at the cache at the same time. Who gets it? Director Leone doesn't seem to care very much, and after 161 minutes of mayhem, audiences aren't likely to either. Go to Full Review

It still looks a treat and a bold and largely successful attempt to recast the traditions of the genre in a new, sometimes critical, almost operatic way. Go to Full Review

It makes a case for Sergio Leone as a true artist and it slowly reveals itself to have real emotional heft when you begin considering some of the ambitious themes that Leone tackles. Go to Full Review

While it may not be the best Western ever made - heck, it's not even the best Western Leone ever made - it's clearly the work of a master filmmaker whose style has never grown stale. Go to Full Review

Spencer Nielsen 05/09/2024 I love John Ford, but Sergio Leone made the greatest western of all time. Every sequence is perfectly constructed, the iconic moments are pure cinema, and Tuco is one of the great big screen characters. Absolutely lives up to its own monumental image. See more SweeTart 04/21/2024 Classic. Excellent soundtrack. See more Kevin P 2h Easily one of the best and most influential Western movies of all time. Even if you've never watched this movie before, I'm sure you will recognize the iconic whistle music leitmotif and the cinematic language during final showdown Mexican standoff. It's been parodied and imitated so many times in pop culture that almost everyone knows about it through pop culture osmosis. Clint Eastwood is awesome, but so are his two main co-stars. as Blondie, Angel Eyes, and Tuco. You're never bored since the dynamic between the three morally grey gunslingers is so much fun as they all compete to get the treasure while each of them has a different piece of the information of how to get it. The movie is masterfully directed by Sergio Leone. The movie has amazing cinematography, landscape, complex shot compositions, and a very iconic soundtrack. It has such great visual storytelling with minimal dialogue for several scenes. Easily one of the best westerns and one of the best movies in general. See more Dallas H @FozzieMcFly 2d This movie would be the Citizen Kane of the Spaghetti Western genre. You better not talk crap about it if you don't understand how vital both movies are in the movie-verse. See more retro b @retrobite 2d The quintessential spaghetti western action film that destroys traditional Yankee heroic morality to offer, in a nihilistic fashion, a treatise on the human condition under the weight of greed and war.
