Critics Consensus

Mixing multiple genres, The Gorge makes for a surprisingly endearing romance until its action-thriller obligations steer proceedings back onto a more predictable path.

Audience Says

The Gorge is a narratively uneven but conceptually strong sci-fi entry that benefits greatly from the chemistry between Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller.

Two rules: don't show me your monster and don't explain it, because whatever you say is going to be silly. They broke both rules. Go to Full Review

It's a tough balance to strike and I don't think the sci-fi part works as well as [the romance]. The two [actors] have a lot of chemistry and look great together, the film looks great, and the score is great. Go to Full Review

The special effects are quite good, but “The Gorge” doesn’t scale the goofy heights in a rollercoaster ride way that it thinks it does, stalling out with a hackneyed ending that makes you shrug your shoulders and want to move on to something better. Go to Full Review

Scott Derrickson has crafted in The Gorge what feels like an adaptation of a video game that doesn’t exist, one that shines especially in its first half and in its impossible love story, brought to life by a dream team of actors. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Scott Derrickson elevates The Gorge through its artful visuals and a thrilling techno-heavy score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, even if its storytelling frequently stumbles throughout its 128-minute runtime. Go to Full Review

For a movie like this to excel, the creators have to thread a very specific needle. The romance has to spark. The monsters have to be terrifying. The mystery needs to be fully engaging. Unfortunately, The Gorge is halfway there in all three facets. Go to Full Review

Ian C @RT26184214 1h Let down by some of the effects and characters which seem inconsistent, but movie was better than expected See more Jeffrey P @vanillavoodoo1 1d For such an odd mix, a two-character slow-burn sci-fi mystery film with little dialogue that turns into a romance horror action film, it didn’t put me to sleep and I attribute that to it not being confusing with its plot and storytelling and in doing that it genuinely made me interested to see how it resolves. See more Stephen L @RT00132089 2d I thoroughly enjoyed this show and have found it very rewatchable. The actors made their characters and their romance feel very believable. Their interactions are funny and quirky and endearing. The switch into the horror part was extremely well done. Didn't fall into the expected typical and was the right level of horrifying and gross. But the one thing that I really enjoyed was how they avoided the stereotypes of the boy saving the girl, or even the other way around. They worked well not just as a couple but as a pair of soldiers, backing each other up while also completely trusting each other to take care of themselves. I'm not sure a sequel is needed in terms of the story, but I would love to see these two continue the adventure. See more Monty A @JakeyScott-Mason26 Mar 13 This film was very enjoyable. The film had dips in terms of pacing, and encountered some amazing peaks. I did feel the film was quite inconsistent, and I also was not expecting the level of action we got right from the start of the film. I was dissapointed with the ending, however, I would happily watch this again as I really enjoyed the concept. I wouldn't reccomend it to a friend, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The standout of the film was Anya, with her acting, and her character. See more Theodore F. @Sirhotness Mar 11 Yeah, that was better than I was expecting I think the first half is better, but overall pretty good experience See more Joe U. @ACSolarski Mar 7 It’s just a sci-fi monster movie but it takes itself way too seriously. This is not high art Mr director so lighten up and we could have a much better movie. See more Read all reviews
