Critics Consensus

Disney's take on the Victor Hugo classic is dramatically uneven, but its strong visuals, dark themes, and message of tolerance make for a more-sophisticated-than-average children's film.

If the Disney team had set out to craft a cartoon response to the ongoing attacks against the company by socially conservative critics, it could not have come up with a more devastating one than its new animated feature.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame offers a pleasant surprise for people who were wondering how the studio could make a story about suffering and bigotry into a fun family film.

This beautifully animated Disney version of the Victor Hugo story features magnificent drawing, fine voice work, medium-grade music and some lags in the story.

In its teeming, riotous crowd scenes, its awe-inspiring views of the streets and spires of medieval Paris, its astonishing animation in fights and dances and its spellbinding storytelling, The Hunchback of Notre Dame adds up to a miracle of animation.

This is often a stunning, even groundbreaking, piece of work that can only be compared to Beauty and the Beast with its breathtaking detail and atmospheric shadows and light.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is simply one of Disney's greatest masterpieces; however, due to the dark themes it tackles, it is unfortunately often overshadowed by other major films of that era such as The Lion King or Mulan, but once you watch and analyze it in depth, you realize what a marvelous film it truly is. It is a film that directly criticizes religious fanaticism and racism while conveying a message of hope; the cast of characters is charming, and the music and songs capture the quintessential Disney style found in other films of the Renaissance era. The climax is incredible, and Frollo is a brilliant villain who embodies everything one could want in such a role. The movie does not disappoint everything it offers is more than satisfying, and it has aged remarkably well.

The film strikes an incredibly dark tone for a children's production. For me, the highlight of the experience was the ending, featuring absolutely beautiful animation.

Overall, I would recommend this movie, and for its target demographic this movie is a must watch. However, there's just a few things parents should be aware of before showing this to their kids. This is one of the only Animated Disney movies that I can think of that have some themes of lust or sexual desire. It may not be so obvious to kids considering the way its handled, but it still exists and is worth considering before viewing together as a family.
