What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Last Viking leverages Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Mads Mikkelsen's finely tuned chemistry to anchor its cartoonish violence and offbeat humor, resulting in a film that's as sincere and affecting as it is bizarre.

As always, Jensen and company are making a screwball comedy, with dark and violent undertones, about finding a community of exceedingly strange strangers with whom you can be as broken and deluded as you need to be. Go to Full Review

It’s a journey down a resonant rabbit hole with Mikkelsen, hilariously permed, fearlessly silly, emotionally complex and endlessly endearing. Go to Full Review

‘The Last Viking' sports a cockeyed streak a mile wild, trafficking in the best kind of straight-faced absurdism—wry, but simultaneously genuine and sincere. Go to Full Review

The Last Viking is stupidly sentimental and surprisingly sweet. It’s a film about a bunch of individuals who are completely and totally dysfunctional on their own but somewhat functional together. Go to Full Review

A Nordic black comedy where Mikkelsen displays his considerable comic chops. His 6th collab with Jensen once again teeters between funny and bloody situations, but the cast is a delight. Go to Full Review

While this film sometimes leans toward the cartoonish, it's underscored with spiky emotions that catch us by surprise as we are either laughing nervously or cringing at an explosion of violence. Go to Full Review

Peter F @Pfvac Feb 21 Maybe I had thought it to be something else, but I didn't find it funny and to me it was purely written. Great actors in a very bad movie, I can't recommend it an feel like I wasted my time watching it. See more Ivan F @Neogrey Jan 23 While I admired hos sinister talent, I could not have stood Mads Mikkelsen, for some reason. Now this excellent movie has changed my perspective on him as an actor who is able to play virtually anything. Such a great cast and the movie is...I didn't know what to make of it, it's not really a comedy, yet it has some horror element, yet it is a thriller of sorts and also a drama. Absolutely must watch! See more P M @Paul23443 Jan 15 Probably one of anders jensen's weakest works. Those who know his other stuff will be disappointed. Really boring story. See more tm11999 M @tm11999 Jan 12 family figures out how to love one another and mads is good again. watch this it's well worth it. See more Luis P @Snaporaz Jan 6 Didn't like it at all. Badly scripted black comedy, too much random violence in useless places and not funny at all except for a few suicide attempts. Would need a ton of trigger warnings about suicide, child abuse, mental illness, mutilation and even a dog is killed. Also I suspect some jokes are lost in translation and you need to be from Denmark or Sweden to get them. See more Marco K @Marco69 Jan 3 A captivating film from start to finish. Also hilarious, but with a clear deeper meaning. An interesting denouement at the end of the film. See more Read all reviews
