Sophia, a 40-year-old philosophy professor, has been in a stable and conventional marriage to Xavier for a decade. From gallery openings to endless dinner parties, ten years have flown by. When Sophia meets Sylvain, a craftsman renovating the couple's new country house, Sophia's world is turned upside down. The two begin a passionate affair fueled by their irresistible physical connection. However, Sophia comes from a wealthy family of intellectuals, while Sylvain comes from a working-class family of manual workers. As they get to know each other on a deeper level, Sophia begins to question her own values after abandoning herself to her great romantic impulses. Similar in some ways, "The Nature of Love" is a superior version of "Unfaithful" and some other similar films built on the wanderings of those in committed relationships who become utterly enthralled by someone else who has characteristics unlike those of their partner. This new person is likely more intense, passionate about subjects that are esp. interesting and exciting. And course, sexually arousing to the point of obsession. But is it love, or more like a very powerful lust; filling some gap(s) one might be missing out on being more fulfilled in. Great performances by leads Magalie Lépine Blondeau and Pierre-Yves Cardinal. Writer/director Monia Chokri weaves a potent tale of drifting souls, new 'love' of a sort, lustful possession, but also shows us some hard realities. There's the way ppl can be brutal to their partners. There's the ways we can drift apart slowly as love become more like committed friendship. And the way we can drift apart by the harsh deterioration of the mind. 3.4 stars

Electric chemistry. Fair and realistic take on the 'nature of love'. Circumstance, attraction and compatibility all have their parts to play. Chokri's lusciously filmed feature shows some of these factors can sustain bonds long or short, intimate or distanced. Driven home by compelling lead performances, you are left wondering whether we need them all to keep the candle burning
