Sadly, the family reunion is interrupted by the presence of a demon attached to one of the bodies housed in the mortuary. This ancient evil poses an imminent danger to the couple's unborn child. "The Offering" is a supernatural horror film that focuses on the traditional themes of loss and grief. The narrative succeeds in dragging the viewer into the traumatic and dysfunctional relationships of the family, using demonic possession to amplify the family’s dramas. While it does not reinvent the subgenre, the movie delivers some truly scary moments that culminate in a satisfying ending. He stabs himself with a special knife, trapping Abyzou inside his body through an amulet. In Brooklyn, New York, Arthur “Art” (Nick Blood) visits his estranged father Saul (Allan Corduner) with his pregnant wife Claire (Emily Wiseman), who is non-Jewish, in his house and funeral home in a Jewish community. Saul welcomes the couple, but Art has the secret objective of asking his father to sign a mortgage for his house to help him. Art goes to the basement to help his father and his assistant Heimish (Paul Kaye) to prepare the body of Yosille. However, he drops Yosille’s amulet, unleashing Abyzou. The demon feeds children and chase Claire to have her baby. “The Offering” (2022) is a horror movie with a messy screenplay about Abyzou, a demon that catches children to feed and responsible for miscarriages and infant mortality. The Jewish environment is confused for those that do not know their costumes and vocabulary, and many words / ceremonies are impossible to be understood. The story is not bad, but the screenplay is confusing. My vote is five. While aiding his father (Allan Corunder) prepare a body for burial, his neglect results in a demon being released that threatens his whole family. In 2012 we saw a film about a demon called Abyzou terrorizing a Jewish family. Although not a good film we did enjoy making fun of the way the actor repeatedly said the demon's name. It sounded like "pea soup." Every now and then we'll still recall this cuz it entertains us. This film is also about "pea soup" but is a much better film. Thankfully. We have so few films that utilize Jewish mythology and set in a Jewish environment. I was fascinated by the cultural backdrop of the story. It is a fairly standard story as far as the genre but by placing it within a Jewish context it adds layers to make it interesting. Sadly, the ending is rushed and the editing could have been better. A well constructed atmosphere which is very important for my viewing approval. It also looks nice. That is about all the praise I can think of because this is really unengaging. The jump scares are noticeably bad, there was no suspense and they didn’t make me jump. The detail of the story is a little hard to follow at times but overall you get what’s going on. The ending though, woof that made no sense to me and annoyed me. I cannot recommend this film.
