In The Retirement Plan, when Ashley (Ashley Greene) and her young daughter Sarah (Thalia Campbell) get caught up in a criminal enterprise that puts their lives at risk, she turns to the only person who can help -- her estranged father Matt (Nicolas Cage), currently living the life of a retired beach bum in the Cayman Islands. Their reunion is fleeting as they are soon tracked down on the island by crime boss Donnie (Jackie Earle Haley) and his lieutenant Bobo (Ron Perlman). As Ashley, Sarah and Matt become entangled in an increasingly dangerous web, Ashley quickly learns her father had a secret past that she knew nothing about and that there is more to her father than meets the eye.

Critics Consensus

The Retirement Plan is a fun and likable Nic Cage-led caper, but its sharp set-ups can't quite energize its crowded, half-speed plot.

A totally disposable but mostly entertaining action comedy drama with a really stupid plot and a few good laughs.

The body count is super high, and it’s fun, but a child is endangered and that’s no light thing. Hats off to Nic for being the character we have always loved – himself.

From the start, Cage sports that deliberately aged look and seems, at first, ready to have fun with this new role of a retiree in action. But the action evolves in a way in which little or no use is made of that nuance. [Full review in Spanish]

The Retirement Plan can be enjoyable if you're looking for an action-packed killing spree with really bad dialogue. It is not clear if it is intentional. [Full review in Spanish]

This gonzo action comedy from writer/director Tim Brown plays like a homage to the early films of Guy Ritchie.

This low-budget crime-thriller quickly becomes an escapist action/comedy with Nicolas Cage improvising constantly as an old codger who must protect the granddaughter he never knew he had.

How can you go wrong with Nick Cage? Just another fun Cage movie that never bores and always entertains.

Story was good and pretty funny scenes. Some mistakes while filming like two guys get into a rolling around on the ground fight and for the rest of the movie neither of them have bruises nor are their clothes dirty or torn. Also some funky death scenes. It was worth the 6.50 per ticket we paid for Tuesday cheap night.

I enjoyed the movie for the most part, however, the sheer volume of F bombs was off putting. Im capable of tolerating a few, but this was excessive! Too we the writers needed a crutch!
