Critics Consensus

The Robber draws on real-life events for a complex character-driven drama that draws viewers in even as it avoids hitting traditional thriller beats.

A detached and precise piece of heist filmmaking - more coldness than Heat - but watchable for that.

Here is a well-made movie with insufficient interest in its hero.

The Robber is a piece of taut Eurocrime which, while unambitious, is also lean, unpretentious and effective.

The viewer is left to wonder at Johann's motivations, while he simply tears up the screen.

This overall orchestration of The Robber as a kind of cinematic device for marking contrastive states of existence is, crucially, mirrored in Rettenberger's own formalistic attitude towards his own existence.

Great portrait of a criminal.

A marathon runner who also robs banks is released from jail and immediately returns to a life of crime. He obsessively pursues both interests to the point of destroying his life. This film gives you so little background information on its subject that it essentially becomes a character study of a character with very few dimensions to him. It's an interesting enough film for what it is, but it's somewhat hampered by it's excessively narrow focus.

Excellent film based on Johann Rettenberger, the real life Austrian runner who was a bank robber.
