Although the screenwriters try to inject some humour, style and swagger into the story, the presence of veteran Hollywood director Chris Columbus at the helm only confirms a sense of franchise-building, rather than delivering something truly special.

It was crap! … I love an anti-developer narrative, but it was so insubstantial. … I felt embarrassed for these actors, the way they were capering. There are so many good examples of this kind of thing done so much better; just watch one of them instead.

Wonderful cast, lovely setting, but the script butchers much of the emotional heart and quite a bit of necessary plot from the original book it hails from. The result is a pleasant but uninspired, oversimplified murder mystery that fails to connect its audience to the characters. A wasted opportunity, seeing how delightful the source material is.
