This is a must watch art-house film for the true appreciators of cinema ⭐⭐⭐⭐ See more Margarita H @RT58080554 Mar 21 Soon after the movie began I realized it’s far from being a commercial film for the masses, and that many, especially Americans, would not comprehend its uniqueness and beauty, and would dislike it. To me, it’s a wonderful, atmospheric and mesmerizing film about the human condition, each individual’s tiny place in the vast cosmos, the magic of life, the difficulty and complexity of living and human nature, the coexistence of the spiritual and reality, of love and hate, of mercy, compassion, joy of living with the pain, cruelty and emptiness. Didn’t see any pretentiousness, only sensitivity. The ending is an ode to hope for humanity. Visually stunning, disarmingly lyrical, shot in beautiful and original broad strokes. I felt deep empathy for the family which embodied humanity - both very personal story, and at the same time all-encompassing and universal from the origin of life on Earth to death and the cycle of life. Nature has one of the major roles in the film along with the actors. See more Cooper M @WiseWisdom Dec 20 The critics have spoken and obviously tree of life is an objectively good movie that I subjectively cannot get into. I am a fan of slow methodical storytelling and cinema but this movie simply feels like it tries too hard in my opinion. From the strange editing style that seems to break every editing "rule" just to remind you that you’re watching an art film, to the vagueness which is in place of real philosophical meaning. To me this movie feels like Brat Pitt trying to show off his artistic side, more so then actual depth. Overall this movie try’s too hard in my opinion to be poetic and unfortunately falls flat. The characters all look the same and telling the kids apart is almost impossible for most of the film. Sean Penn is there but his role doesn’t get enough screen time to have impart or to tell the viewers that you’re supposed to be watching his memories.
