In this new film, Jack Ryan is reluctantly thrust back into the world of espionage when an international covert mission unravels a deadly conspiracy, forcing him to confront a rogue black-ops unit, and the clock is ticking. Operating in real time with lives on the line and the threat escalating at every turn, Jack reunites with battle-tested CIA operative Mike November (Michael Kelly) and former CIA boss James Greer (Wendell Pierce), their combined experience the only edge they have against an enemy who knows their every move. Backed by an unlikely new partner -- razor-sharp MI6 officer Emma Marlowe (Sienna Miller) -- Jack and the team navigate a treacherous web of betrayal, facing a past they thought was long put to rest -- making this the most personal, high-stakes mission any of them have ever faced.

Critics Consensus

Plowing through a routine globe-trotting with mechanical efficiency but little else, Jack Ryan: Ghost War reduces John Krasinski's once-compelling CIA operative to a personality-free action cipher.

The movie does set up potential for a continuing movie franchise. Mostly, though, Jack Ryan: Ghost War feels like a sad state of affairs for the world’s dads (and dads at heart), who deserve to see airport-novel espionage brought to less chintzy life.

Krasinski executive produced and co-wrote the screenplay but doesn’t seem to have been very interested in character development or meaningful dialogue.

[Krasinski] makes you care whether Ryan can get out of pickle after pickle, enough to make you wish there will be another Ryan standalone film in the future.

Despite an abundance of action, “Jack Ryan: Ghost War” never comes to life, playing like a too-conventional spy yarn that, at best, revisits Ryan as he reluctantly deals, as usual, with the ethical conundrums of his shadowy world.

Bernstein doesn’t know where to place, block, and move the camera, nor does he understand how to edit action. They frequently become nauseating.

Krasinski is a good action star but he's a little bland here due to writing, producing, starring, and basically attempting to be a Jack Ryan of all trades.

Have you noticed that most anti heroes are called Jack. Reacher,Sparrow and Ryan. Why is that? Before Reacher came on page there was Ryan. Perhaps Lee Child’s took some inspiration from Clancy. Either way these are top class stories and while there have been various incarnations of this anti hero the most notable being Harrison Ford in the 90s this is the latest. In the form of mini series and to compete with the very successful Reacher series also showing on Amazon. These dramas however while not reacher are still in my opinion very good. It’s been a long time since we have seen anything from Clancy and fans of this will not be disappointed. The cast is great. They don’t come out as often as reacher. So when they do there is an extra level of excitement. I feel that they should try again and make more movies. This was done many times with Ben Aflick and others trying and failing. The notable exception being Harrison Ford in the 90s making about three. Enjoy

JACK RYAN: GHOST WAR is a ghost of a movie, a nothingburger of recycled spy film tropes tossed around by an uninspired cast and crew. Why?

Soooo Boring and lacking any discernible plot. Poor acting for such ‘reputed’ heavyweights and I had no idea what was really going on - such a waste of a Jack Ryan movie. Gave up after 30 mins and watched ‘In The Grey’ instead…

Jack Ryan: Ghost War is an entertaining, action-packed thriller that leans heavily on the excellent chemistry of its stellar returning cast, particularly John Krasinski and Michael Kelly. While the globe-trotting plot is undeniably fun, the condensed movie format makes it feel like it could have just as easily been another great season of the already stellar Prime Video show. Overall, it delivers a deeply satisfying 4-star experience that effortlessly scratches that espionage itch for fans of the franchise.
