A father-daughter road trip set in 1990s Poland, TREASURE follows Ruth (Dunham), an American music journalist, and her father, Edek (Fry), a charmingly stubborn Holocaust survivor, on a journey to his homeland. While Ruth is eager to make sense of her family's past, Edek embarks on the trip with his own agenda. Both leads are horribly miscast. Dunham drags out the same tired, unlikable character she’s been playing her entire career. This film often feels like an episode of “Girls” where Hannah Horvath goes to Lodz.

In order for a movie so hell-bent on succeeding as a tearjerker to actually convince its audience to snivel, it has to give them a reason to connect to its narrative first. Treasure never provides us with that opportunity.

Treasure was a very nice film, old fashioned in the way it was just great film-making. The acting, the story, the setting was all very refreshing. It is a film that makes you laugh and also brings you to tears.

This is an extremely well-done film about trauma and how it is passed down through generations. Had the protagonists been anything other than Jewish the critics would have loved it. Lena Dunham is the daughter of Polish holocaust (Auschwitz) survivor played by Stephen Fry (who did a great job but I would have been more comfortable with a Polish actor thus distracting from the sometimes missing Polish accent). The film starts out a bit clunky and disjointed but one learns that it is an appropriate framing of the father daughter relationship. We observe their trek to their Polish hometown and the current occupants (set in 1991). While this film is about the horror of the holocaust it is also about how that impacts all aspects of survivors' lives and their children. Excellently done and well worth seeing.
