Critics Consensus

Girded by strong performances from Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld, and lifted by some of the Coens' most finely tuned, unaffected work, True Grit is a worthy companion to the Charles Portis book.

I thought the film was excellent... [But] Don't skimp on the development of female characters just because the complexities are difficult to represent. We're going to notice.

Henry Hathaway's 1969 adaptation was highly faithful... The Coens' movie is less faithful than Hathaway's but stronger - the production, by their regular team, is formally superb - and weirder.

C+

Disappointing overall, though entertaining at times, True Grit isn't exactly the Coen brothers best movie but they get an A for effort.

A film by the Coen brothers that rekindles, in a fascinating way, the fuse that was extinguished in revisionist Westerns. [Full review in Spanish]

No dark area of detail or truth is unexamined or softened, even with the un-Coen-like PG-13 rating.

The original is so good. Hailey Steinfeld Allen, I must say, made this one special. What a story, what a performance. Grit was portrayed in its best form. Bravo bravo.

I never saw the original John Wayne film and I respect it anyway for its place in history. This is a well done Western. Bridges is phenomenal in the lead role, working with the Coen Brothers. Hailee Steinfeld is amazing. The rest for eh cast and the action are terrific. This is a very good movie.

This is the best modern western I've seen to date. Everything from the cast/production/acting is top notch. Absolutely masterful film. Great comedy bits in this movie as well.
