What to Know

Critics Consensus

Masterfully using negative space and unsettling audio to build its creeping dread, undertone erupts as a diabolically immersive aural nightmare.

Audience Says

Despite an original premise and an effective unsettling atmosphere undertone delivers a somewhat muted horror experience that may appeal to fans of slow-burn, moody fare.

Minimalism and maximalism can’t coexist, at least not here. Instead, “Undertone” is like getting to the climactic moment of your favorite horror podcast, only to have the terrifying impetus interrupted by a Squarespace ad. Go to Full Review

As Undertone crescendoed through its final act, I found myself pleading for Evy to thrust off her headphones. But Tuason’s successfully nerve-racking film relentlessly suffocates within its inescapable, eerie soundscape. Go to Full Review

Tuason conducts "Undertone" to a fever pitch, a maelstrom of sound and fury that is spookily effective, if frustratingly nonspecific. Go to Full Review

The arbitrary countdown towards the recordings’ endgame provides some momentary curiosity suspense as to what horror is waiting on the other side. When it finally arrives its as lackluster as most films of its type. Go to Full Review

I’ve been to Pentecostal church services in soulless New Jersey hotel conference spaces scarier than "Undertone" (2025). "Undertone" is underwhelming. Go to Full Review

By the time the conclusion arrives, we have become numb to the filmmaker's approach, and the expected non-ending feels preordained and unimpactful. I didn't feel frustrated because I had stopped caring by that point. Go to Full Review

Krista W 3h Very slow going & when it was finally picking up and getting good the movie was over! See more G 4h Characters are a little bit annoying, and Im not sure the movie knew where it was going, then ends really quickly. The sound effects were cool and the atmosphere of the movie was creepy but it never got anywhere in the end. See more Crystal B 4h A movie that claimed to be the scariest you'll ever hear was a major disappointment. It was possibly the worst I've ever experienced in terms of visuals and sound. Wide camera shots tease the viewer with potential surprises in the background, but nothing ever comes to pass. The main character's actions are inconsistent, and the sounds—such as the tea kettle, faucet, or nursery rhymes played backward—are more irritating than frightening. The ending is so perplexing that it leaves viewers thinking, “okay……” See more El Chapman 11h This movie feels like a future cult classic. Very interesting idea for a horror setting. I respect the film's choice to be slow and methodical in its approach in scares. Also, kudos to the sound mixing and editing that really sold it as well. Really good movie. Not for everyone, but if you are a fan of the Blair Witch Project you may dig it. See more omar 11h Good but ending was meh See more Andrew 12h One of the most terrifying films I've ever seen See more Read all reviews
