Sawyer Valentini relocates from Boston to Pennsylvania to escape from the man who's been stalking her for the last two years. While consulting with a therapist, Valentini unwittingly signs in for a voluntary 24-hour commitment to the Highland Creek Behavioral Center. Her stay at the facility soon gets extended when doctors and nurses begin to question her sanity. Sawyer now believes that one of the staffers is her stalker -- and she'll do whatever it takes to stay alive and fight her way out.

Critics Consensus

Unsane unleashes Steven Soderbergh's inner B-movie maestro, wading into timeless psychological thriller territory and giving it a high-tech filmmaking spin.

It's a clever film. And for all Soderbergh's reservations about Hollywood, it's also confirmation of his mastery of its assorted genres, although he does suffer from an urge to see if he can juggle them all at the same time.

Yes, Unsane is rather silly - but thriller lovers can have fun with it.

Like too many of his looser films, Unsane could have profited from a bit more polishing. The film about the false imprisonment is terrific. The other film is really not very good at all. That will have to do for now. That will have to do for now.

And yet, even as I can accept Unsane more easily as schlock, it still so far from perfect that it's actually quite frustrating...

Soderberg's manipulation of his audience is masterful, and his formal choices have a throwback appeal, curiously enough, leaving Unsane to feel like a late-night VHS screening of a cheap but memorable horror show.

Really slow. Boring in places. Liked the direction and thought the last 30 minutes was good. My Significant other, ‘why was Matt Damon in it’

Soderbergh really shows his worth here. Kind of off beat and sometimes a bit daft storyline but he succeeds in captivating audience with suspense, frustration, awe and lots of questions. Whole cast really excels in character. Cinematography good, considering whole movie was shot on iPhone, wow!, that in itself is a milestone. Intriguing and unsettling
