Jackson B @RT67198672 5 days ago When you go to an amusement park and fight the crowds to stand in line for a 75 second thrill ride, you know what you are in for. That is how I perceived Van Helsing, except it’s in reverse. You patiently endured the momentary pause for exposition before the breakneck CGI action took over…a lot of action. Serious challenges for your suspension of disbelief, as characters fell drastic distances or were tossed about, crashing into walls or other objects with nary a scratch. Coupled with holding on to and swinging on ropes or chains Tarzan style, with the next dangling object conveniently within reach made for a few too many eye roll moments. There was a huge bright spot however, the underrated and under appreciated David Wenham (Faramir in The Lord of the Rings) channeling the legendary Danny Kaye as the sidekick/comic relief and pulling of a hilarious tribute to Q in the James Bond films. Wenham is a treasure in everything I’ve seen him in. A modern take on your classic multi-monster film, it’s very much in the same vein as the mummy but not widely considered so being affected largely by a more navel gazing culture at the time. I believe if it came out in 2026 it’d have had a much better reception, I loved the world, the lore and I wish there’d been sequels. Very fun watch.
