Critics Consensus

Providing Alan Ritchson an ideal vehicle to flex his brawny charisma, War Machine occasionally clanks when it comes to character depth but otherwise soldiers on to deliver an awesome dose of action spectacle.

Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) 5d
2.5/5
It's a science-fiction survival film – the Ranger candidates are carrying blanks – with trace elements of Transformers, Battleship, and Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Somewhat derivative, but modestly enjoyable. Go to Full Review
Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Mar 9
The film’s R rating is well-deserved thanks to the profusion of burnt and dismembered bodies on view in the alien machine’s wake. Unfortunately, the screenplay by Hughes and co-writer James Beaufort leaves much to be desired. Go to Full Review

It makes for a slicker-than-usual streaming premiere, an easy, drink-your-way-through-it Friday night option for those who wish to remain entirely unchallenged. Go to Full Review

If you haven’t guessed, it is spectacularly okay, which is why it has somehow become a massive hit for Netflix. Americans agree on nothing outside of a willingness to watch mindless mediocrity. Go to Full Review

As gonzo as that pivot is, it’s the defibrillator jolt needed to make the film remotely interesting again. Go to Full Review

See more Lauren E. @RT95988602 1h Fun watch. Sticks to the genre well enough. See more Verneri P @RT08734508 2h If Alan Ritchson was replaced with someone less charismatic, this movie would be just plain bad. There is a Predator -vibe in the sense that you start thinking the makers of this movie really liked the original Predator. But in stead of the iconic monster the "hunter" of this movie could not feel more like a place holder for a good idea that never came. 2 stars for the lead actors personal charisma and a few really intense action scenes. What sucks is that this movie could have been a lot better with just a little more thought. But I guess the times are what they are. See more Jerry L. @RT13077106 3h Fun but predictable. Hokey at times but I ended up caring about the main character. See more Noah K @RT00042127 5h My initial impression of War Machine was very positive. The opening was engaging, with strong visuals and a script that quickly drew me in. However, the Rangers Academy section felt underdeveloped and confusing, lacking enough context to stay fully invested. The war scenes were a highlight, delivering impressive scale and intensity. That said, the introduction of the robot or alien element felt forced and disconnected from the grounded tone established earlier. The AI and CGI also lacked polish at times, which hurt immersion. However, the ending was a strong recovery, delivering an emotional and immersive conclusion. Despite its flaws, the film left me curious about a potential sequel and where the story could go next.
