Critics Consensus

Providing Alan Ritchson an ideal vehicle to flex his brawny charisma, War Machine occasionally clanks when it comes to character depth but otherwise soldiers on to deliver an awesome dose of action spectacle.

It's a science-fiction survival film – the Ranger candidates are carrying blanks – with trace elements of Transformers, Battleship, and Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Somewhat derivative, but modestly enjoyable. Go to Full Review

The film’s R rating is well-deserved thanks to the profusion of burnt and dismembered bodies on view in the alien machine’s wake. Unfortunately, the screenplay by Hughes and co-writer James Beaufort leaves much to be desired. Go to Full Review

It makes for a slicker-than-usual streaming premiere, an easy, drink-your-way-through-it Friday night option for those who wish to remain entirely unchallenged. Go to Full Review

While thankfully this is no Battlefield Earth, Battle: Los Angeles or Battleship, War Machine doesn’t really offer up many surprising beats as a fairly predictable scenario plays out. Go to Full Review

War Machine is one of the most agonizingly boring films in recent memories, reveling in its garden-variety elements while failing to take advantage of what little novelty it does possess. Go to Full Review

HeWhoWalks B @RT84771156 1h Fun, late night watching. If you appreciate the Predator franchise, this is right up your alley. See more Adrian Z @adrianRO 20h Really bad. Physics is relative - the thingie goes through mountains but is destroyed by some boulders (?). Seriously a joke. Also, it feels off. It had potential but when the movie just invents things as it goes, especially doesnt respect its own rules (e.g. if a train hits me and i destroyed the train, then you cant kill me with a knife, should be obvious right?) it just sucks. See more Terry S @Agaveman 1d As a huge fan of 'Predator' and such films, this was right up my street. Kept me gripped from beginning to end, with some amazingly special effects. Alan Ritchson definitely suits these sort of roles and I look forward to his next instalment. See more Paul S @PManRager 2d Combine Predator and War of the Worlds, and you will get this amazing movie! The story was incredibly gripping and intense, and the war machine itself was very threatening and looked awesome. Alan Ritchson did an amazing job portraying a battered, driven soldier, and the visuals of the movie were truly spectacular, adding up to a really fun movie to watch. I definitely recommend this for action, thriller, sci-fi, and combat fans! See more Scott N. @RT53491273 2d This movie was garbage. I knew from the scene where they made potential Army Rangers act like repelling down a 30' cliff was rocket science. Seriously, this plot was written by a child for idiots or children. It always astonishes me to see so much money spent on such a mindless script. See more Alejandro R @WhatDidYouDoRay 3d This is not science fiction. The genre of Sci-fi exists to point out the horrors of capital, war and the military-industrial complex. The best examples of Sci-fi feature machines and monsters that terrify and kill, but always demonstrate that the REAL bad guys are humans - the amoral corporate stiffs, Big Tech and politicians behind the scenes - think RoboCop, Terminator, Aliens, Predator. War Machine celebrates the U.S. Army Ranger School to the point of worship. The title itself alludes to the idea that the protagonist is an unstoppable force, driven by zeal for his family and the righteous empire of the United States. Ritchson isn't bad but the character - a relentless fighter who would rather drown than quit, a hulking bear of a man who can still cover long distances faster than all of his younger, slighter teammates - is simply an unbearable cliche.
