“Who Killed Alex Odeh?” directly contradicts the expectations of its supposed genre. Instead of establishing a vast mystery for their movie to explore, Osder and Youmans give shape to the galling absence of one.

The documentary is more workmanlike than inspired, although Osder and Youmans ensure that its title has a deeper, barbed meaning. The directors aren’t trying to solve a murder so much as they want the world to keep asking the question.

What keeps 'Who Killed Alex Odeh?' from greatness, though, is its demonstrative form, with scattershot pacing and an eagerness to land emotional points with the weight of a pipe bomb.

Sharply handled, poignant, and deeply troubling, Osder and Youmans’ documentary is both an intimate portrait of irreparable loss and a forceful examination of extremism’s enduring consequences.

Its director, Jason Osder, is the type who makes solid journalistic historical documentaries that are captivating to watch but maybe don’t stand out enough to be thought about much later.

There is a story to be told here, but it's not the one the filmmakers are set on telling.

"Who Killed Alex Odeh" deals with a very important topic and it is full of interesting archival footage. Unfortunately, it's just not a very well made film. It felt like more of a cut of a film than a final film. The ideas were good, important, and very timely but as a film it was oddly structured, jumping from topic and style of filmmaking to another, with music intended to "clarify" what we were supposed to be feeling in a way that felt more like an instructional manual than a suggestion, and just a basic lack of cohesion. Important topic, but not a good film.
